The second international meeting took place in Wales from June 28th to July 4th. The main objectives of this meeting were sharing the work done during the course and going over all the information before uploading it to our web, which was also “under construction”. Moreover, we would present our students with the work lines for the following course, and, last but not least, we would get to know the British experience of the Cold War.
We were welcomed with a barbecue on the school grounds and a walk on the beach. Next day, we had two work sessions in small groups to edit the content of the different sections on our web. Moreover, we watched two films, “When the wind blows” and “Threads”, which portrays the fear British felt under the nuclear threat.
The following day we kept on exploring the British experience of the Cold War. We went to the Hack Green bunker, where we learnt what would have happened in Great Britain if there had been a nuclear attack. We also visited the RAF Museum in Cosford, where a veteran guides us through the aircraft and weaponry exhibition, as well as explaining what training missions were like and how they were important to defend the West.
We also enjoyed our visit to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester, where there was an incredible temporary exhibition about the Cold War – quite suitable for our project! We also took the chance to do some sightseeing around one of the biggest cities in the UK.
On our final days in Wales we continued editing our materials, and we started preparing for the following course, which will revolt around three main work areas: teaching materials to make it easier to study the Cold War, including games; interviews to Cold War “witnesses”, who will give us a more personal view of the different national perspectives (“To History through stories”); and a selection of objects which symbolize different aspects of that age and that can be used as “hooks” to continue exploring our website. We also had the opportunity to know the beautiful surroundings of Rydal Penrhos School.
El encuentro internacional con alumnos en Gales tuvo lugar del 28 de junio al 4 de julio. Los principales objetivos de este encuentro eran compartir el trabajo realizado durante el curso y revisar toda la información antes de cargarla en la web, también en construcción; plantear a los alumnos las líneas maestras del curso siguiente; y, por supuesto, conocer la experiencia británica de la Guerra Fría.
El primer día consistió en dos sesiones de trabajo en pequeños grupos para editar el contenido de las distintas secciones de nuestra web. Además, tuvimos un video fórum sobre dos películas que reflejan el miedo a la amenaza nuclear con el que vivieron los británicos de la época: “When the wind blows” y “Threads”.
El segundo día continuamos explorando cómo se vivió en el Reino Unido la Guerra Fría. Visitamos el búnker de Hack Green, donde aprendimos que habría ocurrido en Gran Bretaña en caso de ataque nuclear, así como el museo de las Fuerzas Aéreas en Cosford, donde un veterano de la RAF nos guió por la exposición de la aviación y el armamento que se utilizaban entonces, además de explicarnos las misiones de entrenamiento y su importancia para la defensa de Occidente.
El tercer día visitamos el Imperial War Museum de Manchester, que contaba con una exposición temporal sobre la Guerra Fría muy apropiada para nuestro proyecto. También aprovechamos para conocer una de las grandes ciudades del Reino Unido.
El cuarto y quinto días continuamos con la edición de nuestros materiales, y empezamos a trabajar en las líneas maestras del curso siguiente: materiales didácticos para hacer más accesible el estudio de la Guerra Fría, incluyendo juegos; entrevistas a “testigos” de la Guerra Fría que nos den una visión más “personal” de cómo se vivió en los distintos países (“To History through stories”); y una selección de objetos fotografiados desde distintas perspectivas que simbolicen distintos aspectos del periodo y que sirvan de “anzuelos” a partir de los cuales seguir investigando a través de la web de nuestro proyecto. También conocimos el maravilloso entorno del colegio de nuestros socios.
