On June 19th, early morning, we were flying to Manchester with the five students selected for this third Comenius meeting in Rydal Penrhos School , in the quiet village of Colwyn Bay, Wales. Our arrival was quite eventful – due to technical problems, the flight to Brussels arrived late and we missed our connecting flight to Manchester, and sadly our luggage got lost! However, we didn’t lose our temper or our wish to do our best in the meeting. Thus, we were singing in the school bus that took us from Manchester to the school, including what our students call “the school anthem”, that is, “Color Esperanza”. On our arrival, the host students were waiting for us, along with the Hungarians and the Slovakians, and when the Germans arrived we shared a Welsh barbecue under a mild sun.
Time went by, and our luggage was still missing, but there was a smile on our students’ faces throughout the whole weekend. And it was a busy one! Each school brought the final product of this first year: posters, caricatures and leaflets to help teenagers to tell other young people about the benefits of belonging to the European Union: “Advertising Europe”. We showed our work in the meeting room, we proposed some improvements and started to think about next year. We will take some ideas for a video ad, a radio program and a short play to the meeting in Slovakia.
The trips to Lladnundo, an old slate mine, Portmeirion, and the inner mountains provided beautiful potos where the green of the countryside and the mountains is mixed with the blue of the coast and the sky – because we enjoyed some beautiful summer days. In constrast with these quiet landscapes, we visited busy Manchester on Sunday morning. It was “Manchester Day”, so we enjoyed a parade and different cultural events in the city centre.
We said goodbye at the airport with a mixture of fatigue, happiness for the work and time that we shared, and the longing to meet again in Nitra next September. We had a quiet return home, except for a new delay that made us land an hour later than expected, but we used it to laugh about our previous experience, and paraphrasing the European Union motto (“United in diversity”), we felt “United in Adversity”. May all adversities be like the ones we had!

En la madrugada del jueves 19 de junio, volábamos hacia Manchester con los cinco alumnos seleccionados para este tercer encuentro del Proyecto Comenius en Rydal Penrhos School , en la tranquila localidad de Colwyn Bay, Gales. La llegada fue algo accidentada: Debido a problemas técnicos, el vuelo a Bruselas se retrasó y perdimos el enlace con Manchester, y probablemente fue en ese momento cuando en el aeropuerto nos despistaron las maletas. Pero no perdimos la calma ni el interés por dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos en el encuentro. En el autocar escolar que nos llevaba de Manchester hacia el colegio, íbamos cantando, incluyendo en el repertorio la que los alumnos llaman el “himno” del colegio: “Color Esperanza”. En el colegio, nos esperaban los alumnos anfitriones, junto con húngaros, y eslovacos –poco después llegaba la expedición alemana-, y compartimos alumnos y profesores una galesa barbacoa al aire libre, sazonada con un sol suave.
Pasaban las horas, y las maletas con nuestras cosas seguían perdidas, pero nuestros alumnos no perdieron la sonrisa en todo el ajetreado fin de semana. A Gales, cada colegio llevaba los productos finales de este primer año de trabajo: posters, caricaturas y folletos con los que contar de joven a joven, los beneficios de estar integrados en la Unión Europea: “Advertising Europe”. Riqueza y diversidad gráfica quedaron expuestas en la sala de reuniones, planteamos posibles mejoras, y comenzamos a pergeñar el próximo curso. Al encuentro de Eslovaquia, el último fin de semana de septiembre viajarán los primeros bocetos de un vídeo promocional, un programa de radio, y una pequeña obra de teatro.
Las visitas a Lladnundo, a una antigua mina de pizarra, a Portmeirion y a las montañas del interior nos han dejado hermosas instantáneas en las que se mezclan el verde del campo y la montaña con el azul de la cercana costa y del cielo –
porque disfrutamos de los comienzos de su corto verano. En contraste con este amable paisaje de la campiña, el bullicio de Manchester que visitamos antes de regresar a Madrid el domingo, acrecentado por ser, justamente ese día, el “Manchester Day”: Una cabalgata y eventos en diferentes escenarios del centro de la ciudad nos permitieron disfrutar de una ciudad revestida de gala.
En el aeropuerto nos despedimos entre agotados, felices por el trabajo y tiempo compartidos, y la nostalgia por volver a encontrarnos en Nitra, el próximo septiembre. El regreso no tuvo mayor incidencia que un nuevo retraso que nos hizo aterrizar una hora después de lo previsto, pero en él revivimos entre risas y nuevas reflexiones todas las peripecias vividas, y parafraseando el lema de la Unión Europea: “Unidos en la diversidad”, nos decíamos sentir “Unidos en la adversidad”. Y que todas las adversidades sean como ésta.
